Kerouac wrote the first complete version of On The Road in April, during an intensive three week writing stint when he typed the entire novel on a single, continuous roll of paper. Sal leaves for Denver, where his boredom quickly drives him back to San Francisco.

Perceptive Sal, who at the beginning is weakened and depressed, gains in joy and confidence and finds love at the end.

On the Road

Sal hates working with the other cops there who are miserable and narrow-minded. He compiled a stack of unpublished manuscripts and only excerpts of his work were published over the next few years.

This, incidentally, involves Sal leaving behind his potential wife 2. In the six years between the completion of On The Road and its eventual publication, Kerouac remained prolific, writing a series of novels he considered to be one long story about his family and friends.

As well as containing material that was excised from the original draft due to its explicit nature, the scroll version also uses the real names of the protagonists, so Dean Moriarty becomes Neal Cassady and Carlo Marx becomes Allen Ginsbergetc.

At first Sal is intrigued by Dean because Dean seems to have the active, impulsive passion that Sal lacks, but they turn out to have a lot more in common. There he meets Stan Shephard, and the two plan to go to Mexico City when they learn that Dean has bought a car and is on the way to join them.

It was a role he was never comfortable with, however, and following the publication and uproar over what would always be his most famous book, Kerouac had a difficult time dealing with the cult status of his work and his own popularity.

Through all of this constant movement, there is an array of colorful characters, shifting landscapes, dramas, and personal development. Sal hitchhikes west, learning more about himself and the many intriguing people he meets along the way. One of his friends, Chad King, introduces him to Dean Moriarty, a young man recently released from a reformatory in New Mexico.

Mexico City is an abrupt, chaotic contrast to the earthy, peaceful jungle. Dean fascinates Sal, and their friendship begins three years of restless journeys back and forth across the country. Disheartened after a divorce, his life changes when he meets Dean Moriarty, who is "tremendously excited with life," and begins to long for the freedom of the road: The winter after that, Sal goes to Dean, and they blaze across the country together in friendly fashion, and Dean settles in New York for awhile.

When they arrive in New York, Dean promptly falls in love with a woman named Inez.

After his recovery from dysentery in Mexico, Sal returns to New York in the fall. That night they leave Gregoria and sleep on a road in the steaming jungle, waking up covered in sweat and bugs. He takes a bus back to New York by himself. In Gregoria, they meet Victor, a local kid, who leads them to a bordello where they have their last grand party, dancing to mambo, drinking, and having fun with prostitutes.
